In 1418 the Medici decided to entirely renovate the Medieval church of San Lorenzo, in order to use it as their family’s temple. Therefore, in this way the complex of San Lorenzo was conceived, which comprises the basilica, the Medici chapels, the Medici’s Laurenziana library and the new Sacristy by Michelangelo, all of them with a roofing whose tiles were all different in shape and laid herring-bone fashion and the high cupola covering the Princes’ chapel with its gores made of flat tiles constructed in the XVII century.
