| 48 - The church of Santo Stefano in Pozzolatico | |
|
History: Pozzolatico has been known since Roman times, as the name “Puteum Laticum” indicates. The church is named after Saint Stephen and it was given a certain importance. In the XIV century the powerful Florentine families (Strozzi, Dei, Monaldi, Ricci etc. etc.), owners of villas and houses in this village, exerted their influence on it. Later, the church was dedicated to Santa Caterina dei Ricci.
Description: the facade is made both in pietra serena and plaster. Inside there is only one aisle with side altars built with the same materials.
It preserves signs of the ancient families such as various coats of arms and emblems of the Ricci family and a chapel of De Larderel Counts, who were the following patrons. We can also see many art works. Among them, on the first altar to the left we can see the image of Santa Caterina dei Ricci (XVII century), depicted at the moment when she was receiving Christ in her arms; on the second altar the Virgin with Child and Saint John between the Saints Cosma and Damiano by Alessandro Allori. On the second altar to the right we find the precious Madonna delle Grazie by Jacopo del Casentino, one of the most important painters of the XIV-century Florence. The bell tower was built in the XIV century.

Address: via Vittorio Veneto and the ascent to Monte delle Ss. Marie
This group of XX-century tabernacles consists of 16 structures, which are placed along the via Vittorio Veneto and along the ascent that leads to the cemetery on the Monte delle Ss. Marie. Inside each tabernacle we can see terracotta plaques with the images of the Mysteries of the Rosary as well as other allegorical scenes. All the tabernacles are made of stone and brick masonry with a brick covering. The inscription on the first tabernacle says: “due to the initiative of the entire population of Impruneta, the 15 little chapels of the Rosary, that start in this place to eventually reach the Monte delle Sante Marie, have been given the antique magnificence, as a sign of the imperishable inaugural memory of the image of the miraculous Madonna di Impruneta. We remember with our devotion its last translation which took place on the 18th October 1714 and returned to the hill, through a solemn procession on the 14th June 1970 in the presence of the Cardinal the Archbishop of Florence e. Florit”.

This niche dates back to the XVII and the XIX centuries is in the containment wall of the street. It is a significant example of the religious transformation of a small civil structure (a fountain) by means of a terracotta plaque with the Annunciation. The niche is framed by a simple squared stone which consists of a base and of two high piers. It finishes in a rounded arch. Every element is made of a single piece. A XVI-century chronicle tells us that in a period of severe drought, only the water of this fountain was available throughout the territory of Impruneta. On the other hand “it so often happened that people afflicted with fever suddenly recovered by drinking this water. The glorious Mater Virgin Maria, our protectress, is to be praised”.
